Step Africa!'s DRUMFOLK Will Bring Inspired Music & Dance to New Victory

Step Afrika! returns with its newest production, Drumfolk, based on historical events that took place during the 1700s in the Deep South. Building upon the success of The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence (New Victory 2017), Step Afrika! takes audiences on a journey from the 18th century to present-day America, where body percussion has shaped such modern art forms as hip hop and African American social dance, among others. Drumfolk runs at New Victory from February 28 - March 15, 2020, as part of the production's 10-city tour across the U.S.

Marisol Perez, a young Puerto Rican woman, is a copy editor for a Manhattan publisher. She finds herself on the streets, homeless, where her many encounters include a woman beaten for exceeding her credit limit and a homeless burn victim in a wheelchair looking for his lost skin. Marisol is directed by Alkis Papoutsis plays November 20th - 24th at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center (Theatre II).

MSNBC's “The Rachel Maddow Show” was the #1 cable news program in A25-54 for the 1st quarter of 2019, beating all other FOX News and CNN shows, according to Nielsen data from December 31, 2018 through March 28, 2019. “Maddow” averaged 552,000 in A25-54 viewers (vs. FOX News' 542,000 for Hannity and 528,000 for Hannity with Specials at 9pm, FOX News' 534,000 at 8pm and CNN's 367,000 at 9pm). Additionally, this quarter was “Maddow's” highest-rated quarter ever in total viewers, averaging 3.07M total viewers at 9pm (vs. FOX News' 3.06M for Hannity with Specials and CNN's 1.3M).

We are performing our production in the 8000sq ft Plaxall Gallery in LIC. The production features an Ariel on silks, a dance company, projections and a huge playing area where scenes will move around the space with the audience following the action.  NBC News and MSNBC will broadcast live coverage of the 2018 midterm elections, The Vote: America's Future, anchored from NBC News world headquarters in New York City on Tuesday, November 6. Rockefeller Center will transform to Democracy Plaza on Election Night as 30 Rock lights up in red, white and blue and programming streams on screens flanking the building. An augmented reality map will display over the skating rink as NBC News calls each race.
