The Town Hall 2014 Summer Season: Broadway Preludes presents Broadway Rising Stars, the annual revue giving recent graduates from the nation's leading performing arts schools a chance to showcase their talents and perform on the legendary stage. Directed by Scott Coulter, Broadway Rising Stars is created, hosted and written by Scott Siegel and features the brightest talent from AMDA, CAP 21, Circle in the Square, Juilliard, Marymount, The New School, NYU's Steinhardt and Tisch, Pace University, and more. Since I attended more than 50 shows over the past eight months (a few more than once)--the large majority of which were reviewed on these web pages—I felt I had more than enough cabaret show inventory to present my second-annual “Mid-Year Cabaret Review” citing the “20 Best Cabaret Shows and Performances” for the first half of 2014. Since the eligibility period for 2014 BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Award consideration begins with shows staged since last November (late October if it was the first of a run), I've included a few of those late 2013 shows in this group. And with the announcement of the BWW Award nominees just four months away, I've offered some projections on the Award categories for which these shows very well might receive consideration.

The 47th Festival d'ete de Quebec-Canada's largest outdoor music event and one of North America's most important summer celebrations-will present some 1,000 artists from today, July 3 to 13 in historically picturesque Quebec City. Today OZ, Nashville's first contemporary arts center, announces its 2014-15 season, which runs September 12, 2014 - June 27, 2015. The season is bookended by premieres, beginning with two performances (September 12 & 13) of Tim Robbins' interpretation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, produced and acted by the company he founded and leads, The Actors' Gang, in the production's first U.S. engagement outside of the company's home theater in Los Angeles. OZ's 2014-15 program will conclude with the world premiere (June 18-20) of Memory Rings, the latest multi-media stage production from innovative New York City-based puppetry collective Phantom Limb Company.

At South Street Seaport, River To River presents 'Fronteras: New and Old Sounds from Latin America and the Caribbean,' a series of concerts and DJ sets curated by Isabel Soffer/Live Sounds, June 27-29. From an accordion fronted Tex-Mex punk band to socially conscious Haitian songs, and from ambient folk and electronica to the NYC debut of the king of Colombian vallenato and cumbia, the series travels the crossroads, the blurs and the beats of both traditional and contemporary sounds. Friday night highlights experimental groups that explore musical boundaries; Saturday night features hard rocking socially conscious artists that speak to today's political and social movements; and Sunday brings out some of the finest dance rhythms on the planet. All evenings feature sets by the NY-based DJ Nickodemus.
