New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) returns to New York Live Arts with its new Uptown/Downtown/Dance series from March 1-4, 2017 at 7:30pm with an additional 2pm matinee on Saturday. This year's program features a revival of Nijinsky's L'Apres-Midi d'un Faune staged by the 98-year-old Ann Hutchinson Guest, a new and as-of-yet untitled pas de trois by Pam Tanowitz, Frederick Ashton's La Chatte métamorphoses en femme, and Antonia Franceschi's She Holds Out Her Hand which premiered at Danspace in Fall 2016. All pieces will be performed to live music. A post-show celebration with wine, hors d'oeuvres, and music will be held after the opening night performance for which tickets are $75. Festival Ballet Providence's (FBP) acclaimed Black Box Theatre series Up Close on Hope will feature one of the most popular works by iconic choreographer George Balanchine, in addition to two vastly different works by resident choreographer Viktor Plotnikov. The program will also include a pair of works by former Boston Ballet principal dancer Yury Yanowsky and a new collaboration between company dancer Ty Parmenterand storyteller Valerie Tutson. This popular Black Box series gives audiences a perspective on dance unlike any other, providing an experience that is both intimate and breathtaking. Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey dance star Mel A.Tomlinson joins Dancers Over 40 tribute of Chicago Ballet superstar Ruth Page in the tribute, 'A World Apart' at St. Luke's Theatre, 308 West 46th St., NYC at 7PM. A dance innovator who refused to be pigeon-holed into just one type of dance, Ruth was the first American to dance with Diaghilev'€s Ballets Russes in 1925, first American to dance with Anna Pavlova's company, first to commission George Balanchine to choreograph and the first to present Rudolf Nurevev in America. Prokofiev, Gershwin and Ravel played for her, Isamu Noguchi designed her costumes and she commissioned Aaron Coplandâ€s first ballet score. She dedicated her life to making dance and ballet accessible to everyone. Ruth's work on Broadway includes her professional stage debut in Jerome Kern and Victor Herbertâ€s Miss 1917, a leading role in Irving Berlin's Music Box Revue 1923-24 edition, and choreographing 1947's Music in My Heart. A double-bill of her famous opera ballets Revenge and The Merry Widow had a six-day a sell-out run at the Broadway Theater in 1955. (more...)

Powell III, director, and Franklin Kelly, deputy director and chief curator, National Gallery of Art, announced today that 6,430 works of art have been selected initially from more than 17,000 Corcoran works in the Gallery's custody to join the nation's collection of European and American art. As curators continue to review the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the newly accessioned objects will have an immediate impact across NGA's collections and will be particularly transformative for its holdings of American art in all media. During the first week of November, the Mariinsky Theatre returns to the UK for an operatic showcase of Wagner's Ring in Birmingham at the historic Hippodrome and three operas originally written for the Mariinsky including the most recent Levsha (The Left-hander) by Rodion Shchedrin. With a 300-strong troop of musicians, soloists and chorus starting the tour in Cardiff with Prokofiev's Betrothal in a Monastery, Valery Gergiev proceeds to London to present Russia's national epic Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov followed by the UK premiere of The Lefthander, both in concert versions at the Barbican.
