To coincide with the 75th anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's classic motion picture The Wizard of Oz, the Farnsworth Art Museum will open the exhibition The Wonderful World of Oz-Selections from the Willard Carroll/Tom Wilhite Collection on Saturday, October 12, 2013. The show, drawn from the world's most comprehensive collection of Oz materials, which is based in Maine, will run through March of 2014 in the museum's Crosman Gallery. The opening will be celebrated at a members' preview and reception, on Friday, October 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. throughout the museum's galleries.

Under the baton of multiple Tony Award-nominated conductor Larry Blank, the Pasadena Symphony and POPS orchestra will welcome stars of Broadway, television, and film, Susan Egan, Vicki Lewis, and David Burnham, who will sing a collection of hits from Broadway to the Great American Songbook. The JPL chorus, under the direction of Donald Brinegar, completes the line-up for this sensational evening of Music Under the Stars.

Based on The New York Times bestselling book 'Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption' by Laura Hillenbrand ('Seabiscuit: An American Legend'), Unbroken is set to begin production later this month. Jolie, who is joined on the project by fellow producers Matthew Baer (City by the Sea) and Erwin Stoff (The Day the Earth Stood Still), has been a fierce champion of bringing this incredible story of Louis 'Louie' Zamperini's bravery and heroism to the big screen. Joining the behind-the-scenes crew are an accomplished team, led by ten-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins (Skyfall), who comes aboard as director of photography, and Jon Hutman (In the Land of Blood and Honey), who reteams with Jolie as the film's production designer.

One of the biggest downers perpetrated by American culture is the characterization of Labor Day weekend as the 'unofficial end of summer.' But given what has passed for cabaret entertainment-at least the shows I was able to attend--since the 'unofficial start of summer' on Memorial Day weekend, the end of summer can't come soon enough. But my dismay over the hours lost watching average shows this season was tempered a bit by the pride and joy I felt watching the June performances of three strikingly attractive and talented 30ish brunettes with powerhouse voices-- Jackie Kristel, Karen Gross and Jodi Beck, who all staged entertaining shows as spring was turning to summer.
