Circle Theatre to Present EVITA, 5/7-23Circle Theatre to Present EVITA, 5/7-23
by BWW News Desk - Apr 22, 2015

Starting off the Main Stage season in May of 2015 is the musical EVITA, running May 7 through 23. The subject of this dynamic musical masterpiece by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice is Argentina's controversial First Lady, Eva Peron. As an illegitimate fifteen year old, Eva escaped her dirt-poor existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president's mistress at twenty-four, First Lady at twenty-seven, and dead at thirty-three. Eva Peron 'saint to the working-class, reviled by the aristocracy and mistrusted by the military' was destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th century. Told through a compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, EVITA creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself. (more...)

SOUND OFF Special Edition: Little Shop Of Horrors! 10 Devilish & Demonic Plays & Musicals To DevourSOUND OFF Special Edition: Little Shop Of Horrors! 10 Devilish & Demonic Plays & Musicals To Devour
    by Pat Cerasaro - Apr 22, 2015

While Broadway is heaven for theatergoers around the world, especially when the season reaches its fever pitch as it is right now, it can also be hell in the right hands. And, that's a good thing. As the exceedingly well-received new play HAND TO GOD which opened earlier this month proves, audiences adore a good scare - particularly when it is supported by a rich and dynamic dramatic basis upon which the horror-show can play out, which HAND TO GOD undoubtedly has in spades (and pitchforks). Needless to say, many of the most popular and successful musicals of all time have also dealt with demonic presences - even if in the case of Broadway's two biggest hits, they are misunderstood monsters. Indeed, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA remains the longest-running show in Broadway history, approaching its 20th year on the Great White Way, while Oz-themed witch-centric musical mega-hit WICKED remains one of the hottest tickets in town. With this week's news of Hollywood heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal starring in an upcoming Encores! special limited-run production of cult hit and famous Off-Broadway mainstay LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - not to mention the big news of a brand new small screen version of the ultimate cult movie musical, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, being revived for a new generation - it seems more than merely appropriate to turn our attention to the scariest, bloodiest and best horror-themed musicals to date. BWW Reviews: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at Bayou City Theatrics Super Let DownBWW Reviews: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at Bayou City Theatrics Super Let Down
    by Bryan-Keyth Wilson - Apr 22, 2015

It was the summer of 1988 when I first heard the melodious JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR score. After church, Mamma and Nanny T would make rounds to the local garage sales and the original cast album was one of their finds. I had a vintage stereo with a record player and this was my solace after church or rehearsal. When Bayou City Theatrics announced this show my excitement ranneth over and I was ready to head to the theatre to see what the creatives had for the American Stage. (more...)

BWW Reviews: SPAMALOT an Evening of Great Grand SillinessBWW Reviews: SPAMALOT an Evening of Great Grand Silliness
    by Frank Benge - Apr 19, 2015

The labeled ingredients in the canned mystery meat known as Spam are chopped pork shoulder meat, ham meat, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, sugar, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. There are almost as many ingredients in the Georgetown Palace Theatre production of Monty Python's SPAMALOT, which includes a hard-working cast, clever songs, and a script featuring the witty and politically incorrect British humor of Monty Python. Monty Python's SPAMALOT is a musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail ' which was a highly irreverent parody of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Monty Python is considered both parody and satire. There are abundant examples of both at work in this production. Among the things parodied are Broadway musicals (in general) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (specifically) repeatedly. The original production was the winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical.
