BWW Review: TRIBES Asks Us To Examine How We Hear
by Frank Benge - Feb 1, 2016

TRIBES by Nina Raine first premiered in 2010 at London's Royal Court Theatre. It won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play in its Off-Broadway premiere. The play is a look at a dysfunctional British family, made up of parents Beth (Babs George) and Christopher (Mitch Peleggi) and their three grown children who are still living at home: Daniel (Aaron Johnson), Ruth (Ava L'Amoreaux) and Billy (Stephen Drabicki). Billy is deaf and was raised to read lips and speak but without knowledge of sign language. One evening in a nightclub, Billy meets Sylvia (Iris McQuillan-Grace), a woman born to deaf parents now slowly going deaf herself. As Billy falls in love with Sylvia, and she teaches him sign language, the play exposes the audience to the deep divide between the deaf and hearing communities.

BWW Review: SKYLIGHT is As Much About the State of the Nation as it is About the State of the Heart
by Frank Benge - Dec 7, 2015

SKYLIGHT is a drama by British playwright David Hare. It premiered in London in 1995, played on Broadway in 1996 and was revived in 2015, winning the Tony for Best Revival of a Play. The play also won the 1996 Laurence Olivier Award for Play of the Year. Hare's brutal examination of an extramarital affair gone South, like all of his plays, is unapologetically political. In SKYLIGHT, we see his examination of the Britain that was deeply scarred by Margaret Thatcher. The play, in many ways, mirrors the divide currently happening in this country with our vanishing middle class. It is as much about the state of the nation as it is about the state of the heart.

Austin Playhouse's THE REAL THING Opens This Week
by Tyler Peterson - Sep 15, 2015

Henry and Annie have fallen in love, much to the chagrin of their spouses, but their affair does not lead to domestic bliss. As Henry endeavors to break through his protective facade of clever quips, Annie struggles to remain faithful to her new husband. This backstage comedy evolves into a thought-provoking meditation on "the real thing" in relationships, politics, and art. Stoppard combines his characteristically brilliant wordplay and wit with flashes of insight that illuminate the nature and the mystery of love, creating a Tony Award-winning play that challenges the mind while searching out the innermost secrets of the heart.

BWW Reviews: GREATER TUNA " Still Funny After All These Years
by Frank Benge - May 3, 2015

It's been 30 years since we were first introduced to Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lions Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The 20 Tuna residents -- men, women, children and a dog -- are portrayed by only two performers, R. Michael Clinkscales and Will Mercer, in a hilarious look at rural Texas life. There is a universality to this script, written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, that is the reason it has held up so beautifully over the years. This current production, staged by The Wimberley Players and directed by Aaron Johnson, is a thoroughly enjoyable evening and R. Michael Clinkscales and Will Mercer more than do justice to this Texas treasure.

Duh of the Day: No 'Han Solo' for Jennifer Lawrence
by Robert Diamond - Nov 11, 2013

We don't know yet who will be in the new STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, which is now set for a December 18, 2015 release. We also don't know what the spin-off films might be, but at the top of most people's guess lists is one that would tell the origin story of 'Han Solo', a part of course played to perfection by Harrison Ford.

Review - Fela!: You Can't Stop The Afrobeat
by Kristin Salaky - Sep 8, 2008

The only negative thing I'll say about Fela!, the Off-Broadway docu-musical inspired by the life of Nigerian political activist and musical revolutionary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, is that it never engaged this martini-swilling Manhattanite who entered the theatre unschooled in the culture and politics of the protagonist's homeland. The professionalism, exuberance and entertainment value of the piece is undeniable and I imagine many of my dear readers would have a terrific time visiting 37 Arts these days. But unless you're going in with a full knowledge of and an emotional attachment to its controversial subject, you may find, save for a well done moment late in the game, there is little dramatic pull to the proceedings to sustain interest for its two and a half hours. An audience full of fans of this internationally known artist who died in 1997 might understandably be thrilled by Fela! but while its potent message of the power of music to combat oppression is certainly universal, it took a review of the text's stage directions and a bit of Googling for this neophyte to get a fuller picture of the life and culture on display.
