A versatile singer, Mr. LoMonaco began his career in the original Broadway productions of Carousel, Firebrand of Florence, Rhapsody, and Sadie Thompson. From the late 1940's, through the early 1960's, Mr. LoMonaco was a leading interpreter of the Italian dramatic operatic repertory. Renowned music critic of the PHILADELPHIA EVENING BULLETIN, Max de Schauensee, wrote in 1953 upon hearing Mr. LoMonaco in Philadelphia as Canio in a La Scala production of I Pagliacci, "Not in several seasons has such a full-throated account of this dramatic role been heard in this city. Mr. LoMonaco's voice is that rare thing, a true dramatic tenor--dark, vibrant and powerful." Of the same performance, the PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS reported, "A new La Scala star is born in story-book fashion. He literally shook the rafters of the auditorium with the most powerful voice the younger generation has ever heard!" During his career, Mr. LoMonaco frequently performed alongside many of the now legendary singers including George London, Cornell MacNeil, Robert Weede and Eileen Farrell. A versatile singer, Mr. LoMonaco began his career in the original Broadway productions of Carousel, Sadie Thompson, and Firebrand of Florence.

Mr. LoMonaco began his international career under contract at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in performances of Wagner's Das Rheingold with Jess Thomas. Further performances followed in Germany and Italy. Notable in addition to his work on many of the principal opera stages of North America and Europe was his work in the field of concert and lieder. His recitals accompanied by famed accompanist, vocal coach and Metropolitan Opera Assistant Conductor, Alberta Masiello (vocal coach to Maria Callas among others), resulted in fine recordings..

During 50 years of private vocal instruction in New York City, Washington, D.C., London, Rome, and Saarbrücken, Germany, Thomas LoMonaco established himself as one of the foremost authorities in the field of vocal instruction, applied physiology and pedagogy. Recognized internationally as one of the preeminent vocal instructors of his time, Mr. LoMonaco produced several dozen students that frequented virtually every major international opera venue including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Staatsoper Wein, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Berlin, Paris Opera, Opera Bastille Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Seattle Opera, the opera houses of Florence, Rome, Genoa, Torino, Bologna, Palermo, Catania, Marseille, Toulousse, Nice, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Bonn, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Hannover, Wiesbaden, Leipzig, Dresden, Amsterdam, Dublin, and the festivals of Salzburg, Glyndebourne, Orange, Arena di Verona, Macerata, Terme di Caracalla Rome and Torre del Lago among others. Mr. LoMonaco's students are further represented on many recordings with Deutsche Gramophone, EMI, London/Decca, RCA Victor, BMG, Sony, Philips, CBS, Nimbus and Telarc to list a few. Internationally renowned students of Thomas LoMonaco include tenor Jerry Hadley and soprano Dorothea Röschmann. Celebrity clients included Anthony Quinn, Peter Boyle and Roland Gift, lead singer of the Fine Young Cannibals.

Symphony Space's In the Salon series gets underway on Friday, October 18 (7:30 pm) in the Leonard Nimoy Thalia with a program devoted to Benjamin Britten's music, in celebration of the composer's centenary year. Tenor Rufus Müller and guitarist David Leisnerjoin forces to present a rare performance of Britten's complete oeuvre for the combination. This ravishing and often profound body of work was written for Britten's life partner, Peter Pears, and their friend, guitarist Julian Bream. It comprises Folk Song Arrangements (Vol. 6),Songs from the Chinese, and The Second Lute Song of the Earl of Essex from Gloriana. The program also includes Nocturnal for solo guitar (1963), an acknowledged masterpiece of the genre. It is presented in collaboration with Guitar Plus
