Today we learn all about Alvin Ailey- a dancer, director, choreographer, and activist who is perhaps best known for founding the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT). His work fused theater, modern dance, ballet, and jazz with black vernacular, creating hope-fueled choreography that continues to spread global awareness of black life in America.

The Ailey organization continues striving to manifest founder Alvin Ailey's belief that 'dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people' during this challenging time through Ailey All Access, a series of online offerings including free streaming of performances, conversations and more.

The White House announced that President Obama selected Mr. Alvin Ailey to be a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year. This honor is being given posthumously to acknowledge Mr. Ailey's contributions and commitment to Civil Rights and dance in America.
