New York Live Arts Presents Luciana Achugar's OTRO TEATRO Tonight

New York Live Arts concludes the 2012 - 2013 Studio Series work-in-process showings in June with luciana achugar's OTRO TEATRO tonight, June 7 and the 8th at 6pm.

Placed metaphorically in the ruins of a collapsed theater, OTRO TEATRO is achugar's current search for another kind of theater; a ritual of becoming; an occasion for communion. OTRO TEATRO, which translates both to "another theater" and "other theater" in achugar's native Spanish, is a dark rite of passage from destruction to rebuilding. It is a dance that is meant to be felt as it is seen, giving voice to the arcane spirit and desire of our uncivilized bodies.

Studio Series work-in-process showings take place in New York Live Arts' studios. Tickets are $5. There will be free in-process talks after each showing (see below for moderator details). Tickets are available online at tickets.newyorklivearts.org, by phone at 212-924-0077 and in person at the box office. Box office hours are Monday to Friday from 1 to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 8pm. New York Live Arts is located at 219 West 19th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. There will be no late seating.

About luciana achugar:

luciana achugar is a Brooklyn based choreographer who grew as a dancer and choreographer in the NY downtown dance community and has been deeply moved and influenced by all of its fluid members. She is from Uruguay and grew up between Montevideo and Caracas, Venezuela; she continues to visit Montevideo regularly to teach, perform and collaborate with friends and members of the contemporary dance community there. She began working collaboratively in 1999 with Levi Gonzalez, and in 2002 she started working independently. Since then, she has created eight works that have been presented, among others, by Dance Theater Workshop; The Kitchen; Danspace Project; Green Street Studios in Cambridge, MA; The Walker Art Center, MN; PICA's TBA Festival as part of CATCH Series, OR; and in many different venues in Uruguay, including the Teatro Solís in Montevideo.

achugar received two New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Awards for Exhausting Love at Danspace Project (2006) and PURO DESEO (2010); a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council 2009 President's Award, and a Brooklyn Arts Exchange "passing it on" Artist Award from Tere O'Connor. Her work has received support and recognition from several foundations, including the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Jerome Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Multi-Arts Production Fund and The Field. She was a 2001-2003 Movement Research Artist-in-Residence and a 2009-2011 BAX Artist-in-Residence and was most recently their Artist Advisor.

About the Studio Series:

Created in 2005 by Dance Theater Workshop and continued by New York Live Arts, the Studio Series uses a strong focus on creative process to encourage artist's examinations of movement-based art. Each Studio Series artist receives a commission, 100 hours of creative residency time and is invited to conduct two informal showings. These in-process showings create a framework for the artist to share ideas with an audience in the intimate working space of the studio. Each year, a select number of mid-career artists are given a Studio Series residency as part of a two-year program of support, leading up to a commission and season presentation the following year. Studio Series artists are curated by Artistic Director Carla Peterson in conjunction with Program Manager Marýa Wethers and guest curators from Urban Word NYC.
