Niegel Smith, Artistic Director and Carol Ostrow, Producing Director of The Flea Theater announced today the slate for the spring season, featuring two World Premieres and one US Premiere. Continuing a long-standing relationship with The Flea, Adam Rapp will be returning with Wolf in the River, which he also directs. The Flea is also excited to welcome two new playwrights, Kristiana Colón and Sarah Gancher. Gancher's The Place We Built will be directed by Flea Resident Director Danya Taymor while Colón's but I cd only whisper will be directed by Resident Director David Monteagudo.

Says Smith, "I'm incredibly excited to welcome back Adam Rapp and to introduce our audiences to two exceptional playwrights: Sarah Gancher and Kristiana Colón. Rapp pulls us to the rural south, and Colón yanks us back to 1970s New York City, introducing us to desperate yet hopeful families struggling for survival and empathy; while Gancher takes us to an exuberant community of artists and activists in contemporary Budapest who are plagued by their oppressive government. These searing new plays, featuring our resident company The Bats, are daring calls to our consciousness and hearts - celebrating our humanity and questioning our resolve to act."

February 18 - March 14:
but I cd only whisper by Kristiana Colón, directed by David Monteagudo.
At the tail end of the Vietnam War veteran Beau Willie Brown attempts to return to the family and life he left behind. Inspired by and including extracts from For Colored Girls... by Ntozake Shange, but I cd only whisper moves through time and space fusing the physical and the poetic to explore the affects of trauma, society, and self. Time Out London called the UK Premiere "a beautifully sophisticated play, which combines monologues, fantasies and flashbacks to tell the story of black Vietnam vet Beau Willie Brown...As Beau opens up, a murky picture emerges of a man at battle with himself and society." The New York Premiere of but I cd only whisper will be directed by Flea Resident Director David Monteagudo and features The Bats, The Flea's resident acting company. Performances are Thursday-Monday at 9PM. Tickets are $15 - $35 with the lowest priced tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis. In a deserted neighborhood in post-communist Budapest, a group of young bohemians build a bar. Reclaiming a Jewish identity their parents' generation abandoned after the Holocaust, they create a vibrant new subculture combining big ideas and intense debates with wild abandon and outrageous parties. But as authoritarianism and antisemitism make a surprise comeback in Hungary, they must fight to save the place they built. This world premiere production will be directed by Danya Taymor and will feature The Bats, the resident acting company at The Flea. Performances are Thursday-Monday at 7PM.
