Virginia Repertory Theatre Opens OTHER DESERT CITIES on 4/25
Virginia Repertory Theatre announces the opening of Jon Robin Baitz's award-winning Other Desert Cities at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, 114 West Broad Street on Friday, April 25 with a preview on Thursday, April 24. The show runs through May 18, 2014. In this searing family drama by the creator of TV's Brothers & Sisters, Brooke Wyeth returns home to celebrate the holidays with her politically influential family. When she reveals her plan to publish a tell-all memoir, the fireworks ignite. Smartly written, with mystery and razor sharp wit, Other Desert Cities was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play. The show also won the Outer Critics award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play.
Chase Kniffen, Associated Artistic Director of Virginia Rep, and Director of the show talks about the importance of this play and it's place in the Virginia Rep season. "Every year we stage at least one contemporary work and Other Desert Cities is a great fit for the Signature Season. The show is an interesting look into an American family and American politics. The script is provocative and fast but very accessible. Baitz presents an interesting dilemma about how far is too far when creating art. Where do you draw the line between protecting and honoring family stories and secrets and using those stories to inform your work?" James River Writers is a Community Partner for the show and will help lead discussions about the writing process and the boundaries of using family experience in personal memoirs.
The Talk on Tap conversation series will take place on Friday evenings after the 8:00 p.m. performance on May 2 and May 9. Cast members and James River Writers will join the audience for casual conversations about the production.

Virginia Rep presents national caliber productions of the great dramas, comedies, and musicals as well as classics, contemporary works, and world premieres, always seeking to demonstrate the unique power of theater to engage, enthrall, educate, and inspire. Productions are staged at four distinct venues: the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre and Theatre Gym at the downtown Virginia Rep Center, Virginia Rep's Children's Theatre of Virginia located at Willow Lawn, and at Hanover Tavern, home to Virginia Rep's Barksdale Season.
