NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES by Tennessee Williams is based on a true story. Delving into the dark and dangerous world of institutional corruption, Williams tells the story of a prison hunger strike with deadly consequences. When Butch leads a noisy but nonviolent uprising to demand the Warden give the inmates food fit for human consumption, the Warden strikes back, testing the humanity of everyone in his prison. Even the most hardened inmates melt at the thought of Klondike, a suffocating boiler room-turned-torture chamber which is reserved for men who step out of line. As the uprising reaches its boiling point, Jim, the Warden’s pet prisoner is faced with the hard choice between speaking up and losing his chance at release or staying silent and living with consuming guilt.
