Experience the unraveling of mythology's most controversial heroine in a modern wartime context, set against the stunning industrial backdrop of Toronto's reclaimed brick factory, Evergreen Brickworks. TAPESTRY OPERA presents a recreation of the classic myth in the world premiere of M'DEA UNDONE. Written by Dora Award-winning playwright Marjorie Chan and brought to life by the lush orchestral and electronic soundscape of Scottish composer John Harris, M'DEA UNDONE will receive its world premiere in Toronto for a limited engagement May 26-29.

M'dea's struggle for survival and revenge begins when she accompanies her lover Jason to a new life in the west. Having betrayed her village to help the military commander, M'dea rages when he distances himself from his family to advance his political aspirations and take a new wife. Thus begins M'dea's retribution and rapid spiral towards the opera's searing and tragic finale.

The site of this production makes it unique. Both Tapestry Opera and Evergreen Brickworks fuse tradition and innovation. Evergreen Brickworks is a repurposed brick factory transformed into a modern community environmental centre; Tapestry Opera advances an artistic tradition to create wholly original, contemporary works. In accordance with the Brickworks' mandate, M'DEA UNDONE will be produced sustainably, using a minimal set made from reusable materials that showcases the Brickworks' natural-industrial setting. Audiences will experience M'DEA UNDONE in an awe-inspiring, untraditional space, and will have the opportunity to engage with their natural surroundings before the curtain rises.

In their Tapestry Opera debuts, the cast of M'DEA UNDONE features: Lauren Segal (M'dea), a two-time recipient of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Encouragement Award and Canadian Opera Company credits that include Iphigénie en Tauride, Ariadne auf Naxos, Nixon in China, War and Peace and Falstaff; Peter Barrett (Jason), whose recent engagements include Peter Grimes (COC), Die Fledermaus (Metropolitan Opera), and Don Carlo (Vancouver Opera); James McLean (The President), whose credits include such varied appearances as Lensky in Eugene Onegin, Alfredo in La Traviata and Steva in Jenufa; and Jacqueline Woodley (Dahlia) who has performed several COC main stage roles, among them Olympia in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Amore in Orfeo ed Euridice, and First Priestess in Iphigénie en Tauride.

Marjorie Chan (librettist) is a K.M. Hunter Artist Award Recipient and a multi-disciplinary theatre artist and Artistic Director of Cahoots Theatre based in Toronto. Chan's opera Sanctuary Song, a Tapestry co-production with Theatre Direct, in partnership with Luminato, was awarded the Dora for Outstanding New Opera. The playwright's debut, China Doll, was nominated for several Dora Awards including Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Production, as well as the Governor General's Literary Award. Her other full-length plays and librettos include a nanking winter; The Madness of the Square; in the garden, two suns; Mother Everest; and The Lesson of Da Ji, which also was awarded the Dora Award.

John Harris (composer), is the Artistic Co-Director and Chief Executive of the Red Note, Scotland's Contemporary Music Ensemble. His work includes operas, chamber music, theatre music and music for film, including work for Scottish Opera, the Sound Festival Aberdeen, Tapestry Opera (Sleep Sleep/What is She?/The Sermon ), the Royal Shakespeare Company and Channel 4.

Tim Albery (director), the critically-acclaimed English director known for site-specific stagings began his career in theatre and turned to opera in the 1980s. He made his Royal Opera debut in 1994 and has directed several productions for English National Opera. His staging of Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh Beach in 2013 stands as one of the most remarkable productions in opera history. Canadian audiences are familiar with him for his many landmark productions with the Canadian Opera Company, including Götterdämmerung (2006), War and Peace (2008) and the highly controversial Aida (2010).

Jordan de Souza (conductor), one of Canada's fastest rising conductors, is the current Assistant Conductor at the Canadian Opera Company with such credits as Madama Butterfly (2014), Un ballo in maschera (2014), La Bohème (2013) and Dialogues des Carmélites (2013).

TAPESTRY OPERA, currently celebrating its 35th season, is committed to defining the future of opera with stories that both reflect and comment on the present day, with a language and style that is both familiar and surprising. TAPESTRY OPERA will go further and push harder to explore new worlds of sound that ignite the imaginations of artists, championing and consolidating a Canadian repertoire for the world stage. M'DEA UNDONE, Tapestry's first major production under Artistic Director Michael Mori will receive its Scottish Opera debut after the Toronto run.
