Centaur Theatre is delighted to present the Canadian premiere of Amy Herzog's 4000 Miles, winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play and finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Directed by Centaur Theatre's Artistic and Executive Director, Roy Surette, 4000 Miles is a magnificent and moving intergenerational comedic drama about a grandmother and her grandson.

After completing a cross-country bike trip that started in Seattle, 21-year-old Leo arrives unannounced at the Greenwich Village apartment of his 91-year-old leftist grandma Vera and stays for a while. They have great affection for each other but the unlikely roommates start to bicker and berate each other in an Odd Couple kind of way. Both are at painful crossroads in their lives.

Grandma Vera is based on the playwright's larger-than-life nonagenarian grandmother who dedicated her life to communist politics.

"I borrowed her biography, manner of speaking, and even precise stories she told, sometimes with names unchanged," says Amy Herzog who enjoyed a special bond with her beloved grandmother.

"Veteran actress Clare Coulter (August, An Afternoon in the Country, The Comedy of Errors) plays the feisty and witty Vera and the gifted Nathan Barrett (Centaur debut) plays her broken hearted, free-spirited neo hippie grandson. They deliver superlative performances that nuance a conflicted but tender relationship and they bring heart and humour to their roles," says Roy Surette.

Liana Montoro (Centaur debut) plays Bec, the girlfriend who rebuffs Leo even though he cycled across the country to woo her, and Li Li (Centaur debut) plays Amanda, a young woman that he brings home from a bar.

Set and costumes are designed by Barbra Matis; Lighting design by Luc Prairie. Stage Manager Sarah-Marie Langlois is assisted by Apprentice Stage Manager Kate Hagemeyer.

The 35-year-old, Yale-educated Amy Herzog has won several awards for her writing including the Joan and Joseph Cullman Award for Extraordinary Creativity and the New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award. She has taught playwriting at Bryn Mawr and Yale.

The 2011 world premiere of Amy Herzog's 4000 Miles at New York City's Lincoln Center received staggering accolades from top theatre critics and played to sold-out houses. It is one of the most produced plays in the United States.
