Highlighting the finest in contemporary crafts from across the country, Mesa Contemporary Arts' Annual Contemporary Crafts exhibition has become a benchmark for innovation and quality. Representative of traditional craft mediums including ceramics, fibers, basketry, metals, wood, glass, jewelry, papermaking and book arts, this exhibition showcases 46 artworks by 35 artists, representing 14 states. The guest juror for the 35th Annual Contemporary Craft was Independent Curator Julie Muñiz.

Steve Shelby, Metal Art 2002-2013

Steve Shelby received the 34th Annual Contemporary Crafts Juror's Choice Award in spring 2013 and was awarded a solo exhibition in the Dr. Ruth Tan Lim Project Room. The exhibit is titled, Hammered, as Shelby is known for his handcrafted metal objects, and uses hammers and stakes to create three-dimensional shapes from flat sheets of metal. His elegant, simple forms, which often convey a playful or humorous tone, are inspired by visual memories and his observations of nature. This exhibition showcases a retrospective of Shelby's work from the last eleven years.

M8k Marks showcases artwork by current, former faculty, and resident artists who have contributed to the exceptional drawing, painting, and printmaking traditions at the Mesa Arts Center over the last thirty years. These programs have thrived under the direction of David Manje, who started the printmaking program in 1985 with an old Griffin lithographic press that he converted into an intaglio press. With gifted instructors, artists-in-residence and diverse workshops, the drawing, painting and printmaking programs continue to excel and become a catalyst for many artistic careers. Featured artists are Lisa Albinger, Michael Healy, Susan Manje, David Manje, Helen Norsigian, Rowles, Augie Tantalo, Janet Towbin, Agustin Vargas and Jeremy Yocum.

First Impressions, Print Calendar Retrospective Exhibition

First Impressions is the first retrospective exhibition that showcases all the prints that have been part of the Mesa Contemporary Arts Annual Print Calendar in the last five years. The exhibition is open December 13 through March 23, 2014, and features artists from across the country, with prints ranging from relief prints to screen prints, as well as etchings to lithographs. The exhibition also features the jurors who made the selection choices each year: Joe Segura, Kathrine Maxwell, John Armstrong, Brent Bond and David Manje. The Fifth Annual Original Print Calendar for 2014 is now available for purchase at Mesa Contemporary Arts in limited quantities. The prints are all hand produced on acid free paper and adhered to the calendar with photo corners for easy removal for framing. Each of the twelve months has a different print and no two calendars are alike. This limited edition calendar, with only 65 available for purchase, is a great way to begin your own art collection or give as a unique holiday gift.

OUT TO LUNCH CONCERT SERIES

FREE, Thursday afternoon concerts in the Wells Fargo Garden performance area on the Shadow Walk at the Mesa Arts Center. Concerts begin at 12:30 p.m. Seating is limited so you are encouraged to bring your favorite comfortable folding chairs, cushions and/or blankets.

Life of the Party Catering will be onsite for each concert offering a nice selection of hot and cold lunch selections. Beverages and delicious desserts will also be available. You may of course pack and bring your own yummy picnic lunch.

Target offers free admission to Arizona Museum for Youth and Arizona Museum of Natural History and special activities at Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum the first Sunday of every month. Special activities at Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum include an area for kids to create their own artwork and a free performance in MCAM's outdoor courtyard.
