Fresh off its critically acclaimed run of Jennifer Haley's THE NETHER, Mad Horse Theatre Company trains its laser-focused sights on Easter and the Lenten season with an uproarious production of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Stephen Adley Guirgis, directed by Stacey Koloski.
Hilariously and poignantly, Guirgis asks one of the most plaguing questions in the Christian ideology: What happened to Judas Iscariot, the disciple who allegedly betrayed Jesus to the authorities? As far as we know, he has been suffering for his deeds deep in Hell, and will continue to do so for all eternity. But is that really fair? Was Judas a plotter, a pawn, or just a man who made a mistake? Set in a courtroom in Purgatory, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot puts Judas' case to a riotous, piercing trial, the results of which may make us question what we thought we knew about forgiveness, faith, and the human inside one of the history's most infamous figures.
Director Stacey Koloski sees clear parallels between the play's themes and the world we live in today.
"This hyper-connected world provides us with more access to information, more tools for instant self-diagnosis, and more pressure to carefully curate our own globally-facing public profiles. It's much easier to help/analyze/ judge others, especially if it helps us avoid facing the struggles of our own inner lives. In a time where many people no longer practice religion of any kind, where is the forum for earnest self-reflection?"
Koloski also finds the theme of forgiveness particularly poignant.
"Most decent people of all backgrounds and beliefs would likely recognize the power and importance of extending forgiveness to others who need it most. Why is it, then, so hard to forgive ourselves?"
Guirgis' deft hand presents us with a rocking, rollicking ride that explores this fascinating, maligned historical figure in a new, fresh context.
