This is a lovely play, full of fun and laughs. It’s written by West of Ireland playwright M.J Molloy, whose centenary is being celebrated this year. His lifelong passion for recording Irish folklore and superstitions is captured in his magical 1950’s play. Molloy’s characters are dynamic passionate people with a great belief in themselves. The Phoenix cast skilfully portrays the many larger than life characters who constantly debate marriage, pondering life’s path in love and living.
They also believe the Woods are haunted by crafty ghosts and thieves of fairies who stole Sadie; they must always be on their guard lest they get spirited away! The setting is by the whispering woods at the abandoned castle D’Arcy gates on the Mayo Galway border. The theme is marriage.
Young women of the area favour taking their chances for a better life abroad. They are enticed by the prospect of wedding older or men a bit crazed, but that doesn’t stop them teasing them constantly. So come along for night of fun laughs.
