The world premiere of composer Joel Thompson and librettist Andrea Davis Pinkney’s new opera, based on the beloved children’s book by Jack Ezra Keats, has been delayed, but audiences can enjoy a video presentation on the work, which shares the heartwarming story of Peter, a young boy exploring New York City on a snowy day—who is also the first Black American protagonist of a mainstream children’s book.

On Friday, February 24, 2023, Houston Grand Opera (HGO) will stage the fourth annual Giving Voice concert in partnership with Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, the Houston Ebony Opera Guild, Prairie View A&M University, and Texas Southern University. The fourth annual concert will be presented outside the Wortham Theater Center for the first time, at the new Cathedral of the historic Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in the Third Ward, in celebration of Black History Month.

Houston Grand Opera Announces Joel Thompson as the Company's First Full-Time Composer-in-Residence

Houston Grand Opera has announced the appointment of rising star Joel Thompson as the first full-time Composer-in-Residence in its history. The company has recruited Thompson to Houston after commissioning and staging the 2021 world premiere of his first opera, The Snowy Day. His five-year residency with HGO begins on August 1, 2022.
