Here's one New Year's resolution that's easy to keep: Make plans to enjoy beautiful live symphonic music with your ohana and the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (HSO). The HSO opens 2017 with "Made In America" - a stellar afternoon of American music led by HSO Artistic Advisor Maestro JoAnn Falletta and featuring pianist William Wolfram on Sunday, January 8 at 4 pm. This matinee concert showcases great American composers of today such John Corigliano, as well as icons Gershwin and Bernstein. The centerpiece of the afternoon is Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F major. "Made In America" also features Barber's The School for Scandal Overture and John Corigliano's Phantasmagoria Suite from his opera The Ghosts of Versailles, which was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1991.

Bernstein's West Side Story Symphonic Dances completes this beautiful afternoon. An audience favorite thanks to its large percussion section and medley of songs from the original Broadway score, it also features the beloved song "Somewhere." Tickets for "Made In America" are on sale now and range from $34 to $92. Student rush tickets ($13) and $20 active duty military tickets ($20) will be available with a valid ID beginning January 2 (must purchase in person).

Each masterwork on the concert program has earned its place in the hearts and minds of music lovers across America. Corigliano's Phantasmagoria Suite (which Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic recorded for Naxos American Classics in 2010) will be performed for the first time by the HSO and highlights Corigliano's compositional brilliance with quotations from classic opera - subliminal quotes of Rossini, Mozart and Wagner - incorporated into a truly enjoyable orchestral tour de force.

The centerpiece of the concert is Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F Major. From its soulful Adagio and deep roots in American Blues and Jazz, audiences savor this unusually moving and riveting masterwork by one of the nation's greatest artists.

"The Gershwin Concerto in F is a happy experience," explains Wolfram. "Written at a fun time in America: the 1920s. The piece sounds and feels American, the jazz rhythms, the great melodies, the hybrid jazz and classical elements that were uniquely Gershwin. It's an American classic!"

Active-duty military ($20) and student rush ($13) discounts will be available for this concert beginning, Monday, January 2. Tickets must be purchased at either the Blaisdell Box Office or at the HSO Box Office in-person. Appropriate ID must be presented at the time of purchase. For more information, call the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra Box Office (808) 94-MUSIC -(808) 946-8742 from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
