MOM BABY GOD to Play Gorilla Tango, 6/25
Madeline Burrows' one-woman show based on her 2 years undercover at pro-life conferences taps into the smoldering political conflict in the US surrounding reproductive rights. Come see what has left audiences across the country inspired, offended, and galvanized to action. "Mom Baby God" is pleased to return to Gorilla Tango Bucktown for one night only on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 online, $20 at the door and available at gorillatango.com/bucktown or by calling 773-598-4549. All performances take place at Gorilla Tango Bucktown, 1919 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647.
What has moved "Mom Baby God" from the campus of Hampshire College - located in quaint Amherst, Massachusetts - to its now national platform? Two things: the play's stand-alone excellence as a piece of theater, and the salacious promise of provocative, voyeuristic material. The Nation's Dave Zirin describes "Mom Baby God" as "a tour de force that serves both the movement for reproductive rights and the art of theater with extreme effectiveness."
At the show's New York premiere last October, Students for Life of America Executive Director Kristan Hawkins sent a member of her organization to the performance equipped with spy-glasses to illegally videotape the event. In her National Review expose of "Mom Baby God," Hawkins called the footage "too vulgar to release to the general public." Several other right wing media outlets have likewise published reviews condemning the play -- though those particular publications have neither seen the play nor read the script. "We suspect Hawkins quickly realized she would be in gross copyright infringement should she release the footage," says Burrows. "That, and people would actually see what the play is about."
Now on the heels of successful tours of the Northeast and the Northwest, Burrows and her team are pleased with the growing positive receptions they've received. "It's about time the pro-choice movement pushed back," says Burrows of the affirming audience feedback. "We've been stumbling and failed to notice just how close we are to losing the rights to control our own bodies. I couldn't be prouder to stand at the helm. Bring it on."
"Mom Baby God" is written and performed by Madeline Burrows and directed by Emma Weinstein. It features lighting, projection, and sound design by Allison Smartt.
