A man attempted to harm himself with a knife this morning on Rockefeller Plaza, anchor Matt Lauer announced on TODAY. The man was attended to by medical personnel and the plaza was cleared to make way for law enforcement. Below, Lauer explains what happened during the live broadcast.

"He was controlled by our security team out there. However, he did harm himself in some way, so he's now being attended to by medical personnel," explained Lauer. The man made it clear he did not intend to hurt anyone else but himself, Lauer said.

The area was kept clear by the New York Police Department and the NBC security team investigating the incident.

Shortly after the incident, Lauer sent out two tweets: "All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks to our security team and the NYPD," and later, "Sorry, a man attempted to harm himself with a knife. He is under police control. In custody."
