The BBC introduced its next 'Doctor' for its cult-status series DOCTOR WHO today: Peter Capaldi. Watch the announcement below!

Capaldi, who appeared in a previous episode of DOCTOR WHO as 'Caecilius' in 2008, just acted alongside Brad Pitt in World War Z. His upcoming film projects include The Fifth Estate, Maleficent, the TV series The Musketeers and Driven. Past TV credits include The Hour, The Thick of It, Getting On, Torchwood, Cold Blood, Skins, Fortysomething, Neverwhere and more.

The show's current 'Doctor' Matt Smith will exit the series after four years this winter. Smith leaves following the the 50th Anniversary in November and regenerating in the Christmas special. During his time as the Doctor, Smith has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role. Smith first appeared in the series in 2010.

DOCTOR WHO's 50th anniversary episode will air on BBC America on Saturday, November 23. The special will be broadcast all around the world at the same time and will see the reunion of Matt Smith's Doctor with David Tennant's tenth. The episode has been sold to 200 countries worldwide. It is estimated the televison event will be watched by more than 100 million viewers, making it the biggest global drama simulcast in history. It will also be shown in cinemas throughout the UK.

Doctor Who is BBC AMERICA's highest-rated series and premieres as part of the channel's Supernatural Saturday programming block.
