As HBO's True Blood wraps up the season, fans were shocked to see the demise of one of the show's most beloved character, Joe Manganiello's Alcide. The werewold was shot and killed in last night's episode titled 'Fire in the Hole', leaving Anna Paquin's Sookie behind to weep for his loss.

Managaniello turned to Twitter to shared his sadness at the loss of his character, posting: "RIP ALCIDE - I will miss you more than anyone. Thank you @TrueBloodHBO, my cast, my Truebies, and my Wolfpack for these past 5 years. #LOVE

Series star Anna Paquin also tweeted her regrets over her co-star leaving the show: "@JoeManganiello R.I.P. my wolfie one. the angel of death has struck again. you'd think nobody would want to be near #sookiestackhouse ever!"

True Blood was created by Alan Ball, who recently left the series. Co-executive producer Brian Buckner has taken over as showrunner for the series based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris; executive producer Gregg Fienberg; co-executive producers, Buckner, Alexander Woo, Raelle Tucker, Mark Hudis andAngela Robinson; co-producers, Christina Jokanovich, Marlis Pujol and David Auge.

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, True Blood takes place in a world where vampires and humans co-exist, after vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans as a nutritional source.

The series follows waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people's thoughts, vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and vampire Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard).
