Stage vet Jeremy Northam will play prime minister Anthony Eden in Netflix's upcoming original series THE CROWN, currently in production. The Daily Mail reports that the actor should "have a field day" with the role.

THE CROWN is the gripping, decades-spanning story of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers who shaped Britain's post-war destiny. The cast includes Claire Foy (BBC2's Wolf Hall) as Queen Elizabeth II, Matt Smith (Dr. Who) as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, and John Lithgow (Third Rock from the Sun) as Sir Winston Churchill.

The series tells the behind-the-scenes story of two of the most famous addresses in the world -- Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street -- and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Two houses, two courts, one Crown.

THE CROWN reunites writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) with director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and Producer Andy Harries (The Queen). Stephen Daldry, Philip Martin and Julian Jarrold will direct episodes from scripts by Peter Morgan.

Northam, who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, has appeared in the films GOSFORD PARK, EMMA, AMISTAD, THE WINSLOW BOY, AN IDEAL HUSBAND, ENIGMA and MARTIN AND LEWIS. He also starred as 'Thomas More' in Showtime's THE TUDORS and has appeared in the BBC's WHITE HEAT.

He won an Olivier in 1990 for his performance in THE VOYSEY INHERITANCE and also appeared in SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL, THE SHAUGHRAN and HAMLET with the National Theatre, THE GIFT OF THE GORGON and LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST with the RSC, CERTAIN YOUNG MEN at the Almeida, OLD TIMES at Donmar and HAY FEVER in the West End.

All ten episodes of THE CROWN will premiere in all Netflix territories in 2016.
