Release Date Revealed for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS; Felicity Jones to Star in First Spin-Off 'Rogue'

Variety reports that Disney and Lucasfilm have announced details of the upcoming STAR WARS film, subtitled 'The Force Awakens' at its annual shareholders meeting in San Francisco. The studios shared that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII, which will arrive in theaters May 26, 2017.

In addition, it was announced that the first upcoming "Star Wars" spin-off film, written by Chris Weitz and directed by Gareth Edwards, is officially titled Rogue One and will star Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones. Shooting will get underway this summer in London and the film will debut in theaters December 16, 2016.

Star Wars Episode VII will star John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. The actors will join original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.
