This Thursday's episode of the long-running medical drama GREY'S ANATOMY saw the depature of Patrick Dempsey, who was part of the show since its debut. Dempsey's character, Dr. Derek Shepard, became the patient after a large semi crashed into his car. His team of inexperienced doctors could not save him. Shepard's husband, Meredith, made the decision to pull the plug.

After recieving backlash from fans about Shepard's death and Dempsey's exit from the show, GREY'S creator and writer Shonda Rhimes addressed the issue.

"Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character - for Meredith, for me and for the fans," Rhimes said. "I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our 'McDreamy.'

Rhimes also commended Dempsey's performance on the show, stating, "Patrick Dempsey's performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example - happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true - of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all."

According to a statement issued by ABC, Dempsey left the show to "pursue other interests". But rumor has it that Rhimes and Dempsey may have butted heads, which also explains Dempsey's frequent absences this season.

Unlike Rhimes, Dempsey was not surprised over his character's fate. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he described Shepard's death as a 'natural progression' in the story, and felt it was the right time for his exit. He also acknowledged the heartbreak of the fans, stating, "I think any time an original cast member has left, there's always a void that will never be filled. Shepherd is a beloved character. People don't want to lose him. He's been in their lives for over 10 years. But it goes on, and it will evolve."

GREY'S ANATOMY airs Thursdays at 8PM EST on ABC.
