According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX has cancelled its Kevin Bacon thriller THE FOLLOWING after three seasons.

Ratings have slowly declined since it first premiered in 2013. When reports emerged stating that Fox would be abandoning the series, rumors spread that Hulu might step in and revive it. That no longer appears to be the case, THR has confirmed.

THR has now confirmed that the network has walked away from the freshman comedy BACKSTROM, starring Rainn Wilson. Fox originally picked up the proejct after CBS chose not to move forward with it in 2014.

About The Following:

For two years, hit psychological thriller THE FOLLOWING has kept audiences on the edge of their seats. Now in its third season - the stakes are higher, and the twists are more shocking than ever. This season of THE FOLLOWING will be the most jaw-dropping yet.

Season Three begins one year later: JOE CARROLL (James Purefoy) is awaiting execution on death row, and RYAN HARDY (Kevin Bacon) has moved on. Turning the page hasn't been easy - the off-the-books investigation that led to Joe's capture put Ryan and his team under fire. But Ryan has risen above the controversy, returning full-time to the FBI, alongside MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore) and Ryan's niece, MAX HARDY; and finding a pure relationship with GWEN (Zuleikha Robinson, "Homeland," "Rome"). But his happiness is shattered when a new threat arises - one that will tear open old wounds and expose the sins of the past - forcing Ryan and his team to unravel a twisted web of violence before it destroys them all - while leading them to face a terrifying truth: Joe Carroll was just the beginning.

THE FOLLOWING was launched when infamous serial killer Joe Carroll escaped from death row, compelling the man who put him there, disgraced FBI agent Ryan Hardy, to return to the hunt. Haunted by his own inner demons, Ryan quickly discovered that Joe had amassed a secret cult of killers while in prison - killers who were hidden in the most unexpected places. Joining Ryan in the fight were Weston and Max Hardy. Together, the three risked everything to track down Joe and his followers, taking the law into their own hands in the process. The stakes grew even higher with the appearance of MARK and LUKE GRAY (Sam Underwood), deranged twins, whose personal vendetta against Ryan's team left a trail of bodies in its wake. By the end of Season Two, Ryan had recaptured Joe and destroyed his network of followers - while Luke was dead and Mark had managed to escape.
