CNN reports that the conviction of Brendan Dassey, a Wisconsin man who appeared in the Netflix documentary MAKING A MURDERER was overturned by a federal judge in Milwaukee on Friday.

In 2007, Dassey was convicted of the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. In his ruling to overturn the conviction, the judge cited the manner in which a confession was obtained from Dassey, who according to court documents has a low IQ. Prosecutors will now have 90 days to re-try the case or the 26-year-old will be released.

BWW has received the following statement from Making a Murderer directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos on the recent ruling:

"Today there was a major development for the subjects in our story and this recent news shows the criminal justice system at work. As we have done for the past 10 years, we will continue to document the story as it unfolds, and follow it wherever it may lead."
