Debbie Allen to Direct Upcoming Episode of GREY'S ANATOMY

TVGuide reports that Debbie Allen will helm the third episode of ABC's GREY'S ANATOMY when the drama series returns for its ninth season. The episode will mark the fifth time the actress has directed the long-running series. 

Season 8 concluded with a plane crash involving many of the show's beloved characters. Explained executive producer Shonda Rhimes, "You see the aftermath of what happened. You're left with some questions as to how this happened and 'Why is this the way it is?' and 'Why is that the way it is?'" While the first two episodes of the new season will flashback in time, Allen's episode will return to the present and feature some of the hosptal's staff in new jobs outside of Seattle Grace Hospital. 

Allen is perhaps best known for her work on the 1982 musical-drama television series Fame, where she portrayed dance teacher Lydia Grant. She made her Broadway debut in the chorus of Purlie.
 
The actress also created the role of Beneatha in the Tony Award-winning musical Raisin. She first began receiving critical attention in 1980 for her appearance in the role of Anita in the Broadway revival of West Side Story which earned her a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award, she would receive a second Tony Award nomination in 1986 for her performance in the title role of Bob Fosse

Grey's Anatomy returns Thursday, September 27 at 9/8c on ABC.
