LATE LATE SHOW host Craig Ferguson revealed to PEOPLE in a new interview that he never intended to take over the reins of David Letterman's late night hosting gig on CBS.

"I didn't want it," Ferguson revealed to the site. "I know it is very hard to get people to believe it. It was never my inclination. I never wanted to be a late night host. I did it because it was fun, entertaining and engaging."

Last week, the funnyman premiered his new Syndicated game show 'Celebrity Name Game,' a TV version of the popular board game Identity Crisis. Explained the host, "Syndication is very fast, like, 'Okay! Let's make 180 episodes,' " says Ferguson. "I think the show works. I'd like to do it for a while."

Ferguson has not yet decided how he will end his tenure on the CBS late night talker, but is certain he wants specific guests to be a part of his farewell episode. I'll have people that I would like to make sure to fit in," he tells PEOPLE. "But I'm not retiring. I'll probably talk to them again in some form. Doing something very big and grand at the end doesn't really seem [to be] in the spirit of the show."

It was recently announced that British actor-comedian and Tony Award winner James Corden take over the hosting duties for the CBS talk show beginning in 2015.
