CBS EVENING NEWS Up +5% in Viewers; Posts Largest 4Q Audience in 9 Years

The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY is up +5% in viewers (7.37m from 7.03m) and posted the Network's largest fourth quarter audience in the time period in nine years (since 2006) for fourth quarter 2015, according to Nielsen most current ratings.

The CBS EVENING NEWS is in its closest competitive position with NBC in viewers in a fourth quarter in 17 years (since 1998). CBS closed the viewership gap with NBC by 597,000 viewers and with ABC by 321,000 viewers compared to last fourth quarter.

Season-to-date and in fourth quarter 2015, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY is up +5% in viewers (7.37m from 7.03m) and even in adults 25-54 (1.4/06).

For fourth quarter 2015, the CBS EVENING NEWS maintained its rating in adults 25-54 (1.4/06) - the demographic most important to those who advertise in news - compared to last fourth quarter. CBS matched its three prior fourth quarter adults 25-54 deliveries.

For the week ending Dec. 25, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY added +160,000 viewers compared to last year. The CBS broadcast is up +2% year-to-year in viewers (7.46m from 7.30m) and even in adults 25-54 (1.4/06) compared to last year, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings.

Editor's Note: Ratings for the week ending Dec. 25 represent a three-day average (Monday-Wednesday) and the year-ago comparison represents a two-day average (Monday-Tuesday) due to the Christmas holiday.

On last week's broadcasts, Margaret Brennan reported on six American soldiers killed in Afghanistan; Debra Patta spoke with a woman who was kidnapped and raped by a Boko Haram fighter; Jeff Pegues reported the San Bernardino killers both showed signs of radicalization prior to their engagement; Manuel Bojorquez and Mark Strassmann reported on deadly tornadoes in the South; Dr. Jon LaPook spoke with actor Kevin McGuire about being diagnosed with hemochromatosis; and Vinita Nair found a book that promises to put kids to sleep.
