Rigoletto is a joker. But sometimes his sharp tongue runs away with him. And his latest wisecrack has started a vendetta that's far from funny. Now, with his daughter seduced by the dissolute Duke, Rigoletto is out for revenge. But he definitely won't have the last laugh.

A tragic story of jealousy, vengeance and sacrifice, Rigoletto is one of Verdi's most popular operas. Jonathan Miller's much-loved 'Mafia' production makes a welcome return to the ENO stage, relocating the action to New York's Little Italy in the 1950s. Scroll down for a first look at the cast in action below!

Featuring some of opera's most immediately recognisable music, including 'Women abandon us' ('La donna è mobile'), Verdi's thrilling score will be conducted by Sir Richard Armstrong. Leading the cast is Nicholas Pallesen in the title role, alongside lyric tenor Joshua Guerrero as 'The Duke' and Sydney Mancasola as Rigoletto's love-stricken daughter Gilda.

Performances run tonight 2 Feb through 28 Feb 2017 at the English National Opera. For tickets and more information, visit www.eno.org/whats-on/rigoletto.

More From This Author

As one who has been an Art Director in several notable advertising agencies, one can easily see how that has influenced Roy's photographic work. Mainly spending his time as a portrait photographer, but when time allows, his other passion takes him to the musical theatre. It is here, that he captures special moments in time to be immortalized. His photographs capture the essence of the subject, and often, the character of the individuals they are portraying. Roy is the official photographer for Musical Theatre Review in London UK.

At the moment, Roy is preparing for his book and photo exhibition showcasing people that have contributed to making the theatrical stage a magical place. Easily recognizable artists that have been photographed so far include Bea Arthur, Chaim Topol, Chita Rivera, Elaine Stritch, Julie Walters, to name but a few roytan3.wix.com/exhibition ( no need to under line )

Over the last 15 years, nearly all the West End photo-calls have seen Roy's presence. He has also been the Official Photographer for a few noted West End / Off West End productions, Matthew Bourne's Early Adventures at Sadler's Wells Theatre, Soho Cinders by Elliot Davis, George Stiles and Anthony Drewe at Soho Theatre, Crazy For You at Novello Theatre ( winner of the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival ), Merry Me A Little at St James Theatre. A new play Savage by Claudio Macor at The Art?s Theatre ,Gertrude at Theatre N 16. And Richard Stirling?s A Princess Undone.

In the current climate of media awareness, Roy is a firm believer that the photographer should be an integral member of any production team. Especially in its early stages, when a production is not yet open to the public, it is down to the photographer to help raise public awareness. He strongly feels that they should be recognized for their work when bringing a show to life. For that reason, it is his mission to make sure that their contribution should be reflected in all official engagements. This should include promotional pamphlets, websites and theatre programs.
