Musical-Themed LA LA LAND & More Set for 2016 Toronto Film Festival

At a live news conference this morning, TIFF director and chief executive Piers Handling and artistic director Cameron Bailey announced that the 41st edition of the Toronto International Film Festival will open with THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film is a remake of the iconic 1960s Western and stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard.

In addition, it was announced that the closing night film will be Kelly Fremon's The Edge of Seventeen, starring Hallee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson. Other films set for this year's festival include Oliver Stone's Snowden, David Oyelowo-Lupita Nyong'o starrer Queen of Katwe, Amma Asante's A United Kingdom, Jeff Nichol's Loving, Gemma Arterton starrer Their Finest.

Also selected are Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals, Una, starring Rooney Mara, Paul Verhoeven's Elle, starring Isabelle Huppert and Ben Younger's boxing drama Bleed For This with Miles Teller.

The Weinstein Company's Lion, starring Dev Patel and Rooney Mara, will have its World Premiere at the festival. Nate Parker's A Birth of a Nation and Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester-by-the-Sea, both hits at this year's Sundance Festival, are also among the festival's lineup.

Also son the roster is the much-anticipated musical LA LA LAND, LA LA LAND. Written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) and starring Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, John Legendand J. K. Simmons (winner of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Whiplash), the film opened the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
