On Thursday, Sept. 15, Grammy-winning rock band The Flaming Lips will stop in at Binny's in Lincoln Park to celebrate Brainville Rye Whiskey, a truly unique collaboration between Evanston craft distillery FEW Spirits and the legendary group. The full band, including singer/guitarist Wayne Coyne, will be on hand to meet and take photos with fans, and sign bottles of Brainville. FEW Spirits founder and master distiller Paul Hletko will also be signing bottles and pouring samples of both Brainville and FEW's full line of whiskies and gins. (The event is in advance of the Lips' headlining performance at Riot Fest the following day.)
The bottle signing event will be held from 7 to 9 PM at Binny's Beverage Depot, 1720 N. Marcey St. in Chicago. Customers can take photos with The Flaming Lips and have their bottles of Brainville signed by the band and FEW's production team, including Hletko. This will be fans' first chance to purchase the limited-edition Brainville Rye, which will be available on The Flaming Lips' current concert tour and will be rolling out to retailers nationwide in October. Brainville Rye Whiskey is made from a combination of rye, corn and malted barley, and aged in new, charred American oak barrels custom-made in Minnesota. Like FEW's award-winning regular rye whiskey, the mash is fermented using a French wine yeast, giving the whiskey stone-fruit, apple and pear notes over a background of sharp spice. It features an appropriately Lips-ian label designed by Justin Helton of Status Serigraph, a Knoxville, Tenn.-based studio who has designed materials for some of today's biggest musical acts, including Phish, The Avett Brothers, My Morning Jacket, Ween, The Black Keys; breweries, including Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Great Raft Brewing; and festivals, like Bonnaroo, Forecastle, Austin City Limits and Outside Lands. Brainville Rye is bottled at 80-proof and will roll out to better retailers in key FEW Spirits markets this October. The suggested retail price is $124.99 for a 750-mL bottle.
