Los Angeles-based producer SPL releases his highly anticipated 'Balearic Bass' EP through SMOG Records, out now. The seven-track EP features his signature 'Balearic bass' sound -- one that combines '90s Ibiza rave elements with his own brand of heavy bass.

"I had grown up on a lot of Balearic-inspired dance music and I noticed that my early influences were coming through in my latest tracks. When it dawned on me that a lot of what I was writing was melodically-inspired and seemed like a hybrid of Ibiza anthems and bass music, it occurred to me to run with the theme and so Balearic Bass was born," SPL tells THUMP.

SPL is a revered SMOG heavy hitter who is as notorious for his impeccable sound quality as he is for his forward-thinking beats. He has garnered a massive international fan base over the years for his ability to crush dance floors and enter new territories time and time again. SPL has released music on Rottun, Play Me, SMOG, Subhuman and his own Hollow Point Recordings. SMOG resident DJ/Producer Kelly Dean, who also appears on the release, has been an integral part of the Los Angeles bass music scene since 2008, producing original tracks and remixes that have impressed both fans and producers alike. SPL's work has been remixed by Bro Safari, UZ, Big Gigantic, and more, and he has received international support and airplay by 12th Planet, Plastician, BBC 1xtra and BBC Radio1.

'Balearic Bass' draws influence from the Balearic sound originating from Ibiza that gained popularity in the mid-90s. The sound encompasses a variety of elements spanning across multiple genres including bass drum, snare, and hi-hats programmed in certain laid back swing-beat patterns along with soul, Latin, African, funk and dub affectations. SPL takes this sound and gives it his own modern interpretation, adding hard-hitting dubstep kicks and snares, well-crafted basslines, and modernized, crunked-out drum programming. The EP's final track, 'Rain,' is a high-energy drum and bass tune that incorporates big room vocals, beautiful arpeggios as well as heavy, reverberated piano. This masterfully crafted EP gives new meaning to its title, 'Balearic Bass,' and can be considered by many to be a genre title of its own. As ThisSongisSick.com has noted, it's time to "Get ready for the reign of SPL."

'Balearic Bass' will be released is out now on SMOG Records and available on Beatport, iTunes and all major online music retailers.
