Mary Elizabeth MiCari Prepares to Open BAY RIDGE VOICE, 10/27
A group of artists from various theaters and schools have joined forces to create Bay Ridge Voice, a new vocal studio in the heart of Brooklyn, opening its doors with a concert on Saturday, October 27 at 8:00 p.m. at the Bay Ridge Jewish Center.
Leading this band of merry musicians is Mary Elizabeth MiCari who – for more than 30 years – has fostered new artists and their arts in Manhattan and her native Brooklyn.
Ms. MiCari has been singing since the tender age of six and is an accomplished opera singer turned jazz performer who has been teaching voice for over a decade. She is always excited about giving opportunities to new talent. Many of her former students now work professionally.
In the 80s, Ms. MiCari founded None of the Above Theater – a company that began in Brooklyn College – and took it to Manhattan where it flourished for more than 20 years; with Jay Michaels, she founded Genesis Repertory in 1999 and continues to serve as the company's artistic director. Today she helms all of Genesis’ subsidiaries including Genesis Pictures, G.A.i.A (Girl Artists Innovating Art), and Bay Ridge Voice.
On her own, she sports an impressive list of Broadway staff credentials including The Light in the Piazza, Spamalot, Spring Awakening, Wicked, Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang, Little Women, Wonderful Town, Candide featuring Patti LuPone, Aida, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. As a director, Ms. MiCari’s work appeared at all of New York’s arts festivals including the Fringe and Midtown International; As a designer, her work was seen at Lincoln Center, HBO Summer Stage, and LaMama; and on film for “Norman Normal” (Presented at Cannes Film Festival & International Film Festival Ireland), “Duane Incarnate” (featuring Kristen Johnson and Cynthia Watros), “89 Seconds at Alcazar” (Eve Sussman, dir.; premiered at Whitney Biennial), and many others.
