Mariza is Portugal's musical grande dame, and for critics and fans alike, the voice most identified with her nation's proud Fado music genre. Mariza will perform at the Gallo Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, November 6.

Tickets for the concert are $20 to $55, and may be purchased online at www.galloarts.org, by calling (209) 338-2100, or from the Gallo Center ticket office at 1000 I Street in downtown Modesto.

Says Rolling Stone Magazine: "Fado is the traditional music of Portugal... austere and deeply melancholic. Mariza is the music's biggest star for a reason: She sings it not as musty nostalgia but as exuberant twenty-first-century pop, with a low, mesmerizing alto that's as commanding as any pop singer today...remaking Fado's ancient sadness into a majestic modern sound."

While singled out as Fado's biggest star, Mariza is not reluctant to experiment with the genre that has catapulted her to international acclaim. Her newest album, "Terra," offers a compelling example of her creative exploration. One bonus track is the song "Smile," which was written by silent film star Charlie Chaplin and was recorded most notably by Nat King Cole. As critics have observed, it is sung with a beautiful melancholy that only this fadista can bring to it.
