Mary Travers: A Woman's Words is a frank, insightful account of the life of legendary folksinger Mary Travers, of the dynamic trio Peter, Paul and Mary. Available at Amazon.com and told in her own words these captivating essays, opinion columns, speeches, stage monologues and poetry, were written over the last 25 years of her life.

She reveals with blunt honesty, her childhood - being raised by a single mother who suffered a mental breakdown and attempted suicide - being embraced and protected by a loving African-American couple - undergoing a dangerous illegal abortion, which solidified her commitment to champion women's rights - and finding solace in singing, while learning to maneuver on the show business tightrope of international fame and fortune.

When not in the spotlight, her family life was her haven from the rigors of recording and touring. The generations of Travers women - her mom, her daughters and granddaughters were her ultimate joy and focus. She writes extensively about motherhood in its various phases and her view of that familial interplay with its changing dynamics.

Noel Paul Stookey, of the famous trio feels the book is "not so much a revelation as a confirmation of character - from tender to tirade these are loving yet often edgy observations of my keen-eyed feminist partner."

Excerpts from her radio show, "Mary Travers and Friends," showcase interviews with music legends Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and Richie Havens, bringing a clearer focus into their artistry and inspirations for their musical careers.

The foreword written by Peter Yarrow, her life-long musical partner, recounts Mary's passion for reading and literature and her love of writing about issues she found politically, socially and emotionally relevant. Mike Renshaw, a veteran Pennsylvania journalist and Mary's long-time editor and writing coach, has edited the book.

Ironically, in the early years of the Peter, Paul and Mary phenomenon she was advised not to talk on stage, but rather to look sexy and mysterious, and just sing. Mary shares her words through various forms of writing and inspires readers to continue the quest for social justice and peace. Mary Travers: A Woman's Words available at Amazon.com.
