Kids Perform with the Pros in COME JOIN THE BAND! Program

Imaging being a kid who loves music and performing in a real band with professional musicians at iconic NYC venues. Now imagine learning to play your instrument under the inspiring mentorship of those celebrated pros at one of the most venerable rehearsal studios in New York City, where almost all the pro musicians rehearse. AtCome Join the BAND!, a high octane after school program for kids ages 4 - 18, that's exactly what happens.

The brainchild of Stephen Jacobs, co-founder of the groundbreaking, arts-based, peace education program Kids Creative and the critically praised, ridiculously entertaining The Dirty Sock Funtime Band, Come Join the BAND! emphasizes teamwork, musicianship, and fun, under the guidance of international musicians whose credits range from Blue Man Group to Doctor Nerve to The Dirty Sock Funtime Band and more.

Say Stephen Jacobs, 'I started Come Join the BAND! as a reward for my guitar and bass students who were doing extremely well but didn't have playing opportunities. Come Join the BAND! gives them the chance to play with friends and mentors every week at rehearsal and at concerts, as well as giving them weekly practice goals and deadlines. CJtB also infuses a social component into their music education, which I believe makes learning fun. And fun learning is effective learning.'

Modeled on educational principles developed by brothers Adam and Stephen Jacobs for Kids Creative, Come Join the BAND! aims to teach children how to master a musical instrument, tap into their inner creativity, and work effectively with others in a musical community.

While skill-based instruction and practice support are central to its program, Come Join the BAND! gives special emphasis to developing social and emotional intelligence in a peace-based environment, encouraging kids to be confident and kind as they build effective working relationships with one another.

Come Join the BAND! opened the doors to its first session in the fall of 2011. The program has grown steadily through word of mouth over the past three years, never turning away a student and offering tuition assistance and scholarships in order to cultivate diversity and ensure access to music education for all.

Enrollment is ongoing. Free trial classes are available. Come Join the BAND! sessions take place at UltraSound Studios, 251 W. 30th St., NYC. The program offers a shuttle that runs from the Upper West Side.
