When country singer / songwriter Taylor Loren sat down to write a song about her grandmother she didn't plan to write a story about Alzheimer's disease. "It's just her story. It's what I grew up with and what I went through. I'm still going through it," the 23 year-old songstress states.

Alzheimer's disease is the nation's sixth leading cause of death with an estimated 5.3 million Americans diagnosed with the illness that robs the memory of its sufferers. That number is expected to increase to 13.8 million by the year 2050 barring the development of a medical breakthrough.

For Taylor's 83 year-old grandmother, the disease came on slowly over the past ten years. "She started picking up the remote control instead of the telephone and little things like that. Her mother and her sister's had it too. She knew she was coming down with it." So it was only natural for Taylor to include this part of her grandmother's story in her song Her Soul from her new EP Dreamin'. "It's really sad watching this person you know and love disappear before your eyes but still be here. It's heart wrenching to watch and live with."

When Taylor sat down to pen a story about her grandmother, it was a part of their relationship that had to be told. During the song, she also reminisces about her childhood days with her grandma. Playing with paper dolls and wearing hand made clothes her grandma made her. "She was your typical old fashioned grandma making pies from scratch and going to church every Sunday. She got married at 17 years old to my grandpa, and they are still married. She raised her family and grandkids. That was all she wanted in life was to take care of the ones she loved. She was everyone's favorite grandma."

Recording the song and music video has been an emotionally challenging but rewarding experience for Taylor Loren. But she realizes the opportunity telling her story brings. "This disease doesn't just impact seniors. It affects young people too. We are going through it also. My song and music video tells that story, and it also gives others dealing with this debilitating disease something they can identify with and know they are not alone in this process. And hopefully, we can raise awareness and find a cure, so others don't have to go through this painful experience."
