Centenary Stage Company's annual January Jazz Fest continues this month with Stanton Davis Jr. and the New Orleans Sound on Saturday, January 17 at 8pm in the Sitnik Theater located in the David and Carol Lackland Center on the campus of Centenary College. Born and raised in the rich musical traditions of New Orleans, Stanton Davis Jr. is American Jazz trumpeter whom has performed with the biggest names in Jazz, as well as, the orchestra pits of Broadway.

After studying and playing trumpet locally, Davis attended the Berklee College of Music, graduating at the end of the 60s, then continued his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music. He worked in radio and clubs in the Boston area, gradually extending his skills and experience with a variety of engagements with leaders such as Lester Bowie, Charlie Haden, George Gruntz and Richard Muhal Abrams. As these artists suggest, Davis' musical inclinations lie on hard bop and post-bop areas of jazz. He has also clearly indicated a desire to encourage young musicians and in this direction he has taught extensively, including spells at Wellesley and Bennington colleges, NEM, and at Southeast University, Massachusetts, in the mid-70s to early 80s. Also in the early 80s, he extended his own studies at Wellesley. His more commercially orientated work includes stints with Broadway theatre pit bands. He has recorded with some if the above named artists and also with Ray Anderson and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
