Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the The Recording Academy gave a statement on Maurice Jarre's passing today.

"Maurice Jarre's versatility was evident in the diverse sounds he used to create the scores of many great films including Lawrence of Arabia, Dead Poets Society, and Dr. Zhivago, for which he received a GRAMMY Award in 1966.

His stylistic reach extended from classical music to tribal music to electronica, and he always created a unique sonic ambiance that set the mood for the film.

Our deepest sympathies extend to the family and friends of this great composer whose musical legacy forever lives on in film."

News service Reuters reported the sad news that Oscar-winning French composer Maurice Jarre, who wrote the bold, lyrical scores for films including "Doctor Zhivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia," died in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
