Deadline reports that Sony's controversial comedy THE INTERVIEW brought in more money online than it did in its limited theatrical release over the last several days. Sony Pictures has revealed in a press release that the film pulled in over $15 million over the long holiday weekend from online purchases and rentals alone in both the US and Canada. In addition, the film has already been rented or purchased over 2 million times.

The Verge reports that most of the film's sales came from YouTube and Google Play Movies. The film was also available for viewing on Xbox Video a dedicated Sony website, and Apple's iTunes Store. The figures reported by Sony today only include sales through Saturday, so the final weekend count should increase.

THE INTERVIEW follows Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) who run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show "Skylark Tonight." When they discover that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.
