On July 2nd, NewFilmmakers NY screens its 2014 Spring Series with new programming. The NewFilmmakers NY Series screens at Anthology Film Archives on the Lower East Side at 32 Second Avenue & 2nd Street. Tickets for the Spring Screening Series 2014 are only $6 and are good for the whole night's screenings and receptions. They are available at the Anthology Box Office the night of screening.

A TV network investigation team visits a small Louisiana town to film racial profiling and the police killing of an unarmed grandfather on his porch. There they find out that the town is also home to the grave of Black Panther Party Leader, Fred Hampton, the dynamic Illinois State Chapter Chairman. Hampton was killed in an illegal Chicago police raid in 1969. Activists around the world remember "Chairman Fred." But so does the Klu Klux Klan. Starring Vadim Jean, this 2010 documentary is about the Angola 3, three prisoners who while serving their time in Angola State Prison (the United States' most notorious penal colony) joined the BPP and participated in non- violent resistance campaigns protesting the terrible conditions, prisoner abuse and sexual slavery rampant inside the prison. As a result they were falsely accused of murder while in prison and have all been, with the exception of Robert King who was released in 2001, serving the last 38 years in solitary confinement.

As Mirai Scott, a civil rights attorney, celebrates her most recent court victory on behalf of a wrongfully convicted man, she is contacted by her father, Rolly Spencer, a former Black Panther who went underground 30 years earlier to escape an attempted murder charge. Mirai refuses to take Rolly's case, but her curiosity about her parents' relationship is aroused when her otherwise frank-speaking mother, Fredi Scott, refuses to talk about what happened between her and Mirai's father during their days in the Party. Mirai's efforts to win Rolly's freedom uncover painful and dangerous secrets from her parents' past through which she learns the true meaning of family and love.
