Democratic state Representative Patricia Todd announced yesterday, December 3, that she plans to name her bill, which bars "discrimination against lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender teachers and state employees," after Cook.

Cook, an Alabama native, accepted an Alabama Academy of Honor Award last month.

In his speech, he criticized the state for its stance on LGBT rights, saying: "As a state, we took too long to take steps toward equality. We were too slow on equality for African-Americans. We were too slow on interracial marriage. And we are still too slow for equality for the LGBT community."

Cook came out as gay a few days after his speech. Apple's CEO since 2011, he graduated from Alabama's Auburn University with a bachelor's in industrial engineering.
