In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Diablo Cody, the screenwriter behind JUNO, and most recently RIKKI AND THE FLASH revealed that she is retiring from directing following the 2013 Video On Demand flop PARADISE.
"I am retired from directing," Cody tells THR. "I don't think I possess the leadership qualities required to be a director."Once Cody finishes up her current projects, penning the scripts for Sony's BARBIE movie and an Amazon series with Louis C.K. and Tig Notaro, she plans to "stay home in my sweatpants from now on."
The new film RICKI AND THE FLASH, starring Meryl Streep as an aging rock and roll star who returns home to find that her kids still hold resentment towards her for abandoning them during their childhoods, opened last weekend to over $6 million at the U.S. box office. She tells THR that she pulled from her own experiences as a working mom when writing the screenplay. "I have a creative job and I'm very passionate about it, and it is time-consuming. Are my kids going to see that as something admirable or are they going to resent me for it?" she shares, adding "I don't know what the answer is, although I've talked to a lot of older parents who have told me that I should probably steel myself for disappointment."
