After reviewing papers and documents provided by a professor of history at Florida State University about Lewis G. Clarke, his great-grandson, author Carver Clark Gayton realized that his great-grandfather's story was more than an interesting family folklore. He was convinced that Clarke's achievements within the anti-slavery and human rights movements were of such importance and the entire nation could benefit from them.

"When Owing a Shilling Costs a Dollar" (published by Xlibris) is a riveting biography of a slave, one-eight black, who escapes from slavery with his two brothers and becomes a leading figure within America's anti-slavery and human rights movement. It shares with readers Clarke's role in these movements, driven essentially by his elusive and ephemeral desire to have the kind of family life he never experienced as a child.

"When Owing a Shilling Costs a Dollar" reveals a relatively unknown important figure in U.S. history. It brings to life Lewis G. Clarke the prototype of "George Harris", the rebellious quadroon slave within Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin."It provides a clear connection between what we face in America concerning race and what Clarke faced during his lifetime. It also shows in many ways the historical interconnection between blacks and whites. Whether we like it or not, blacks and whites in this country are more "family" than most of us are willing to admit," the author said.
