The year 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War I and the 75th Anniversary of World War II. In commemoration of both events, the Canton Symphony will perform a concert, titled Remembrance, on November 23 at 7:30pm at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall. The program features Westwater Arts Photochoreography that includes historic photos from both time periods masterfully choreographed to the music and projected above the stage.
The World War I portion, set to Aaron Copland's Quiet City, uses archival photos to offer a glimpse into the turbulent period from 1914 to 1918 and emphasizes the collision between centuries-old traditions and the emergence of modern warfare that set the stage for the 20th century's abrupt coming of age.Set to Copland's Symphony No. 3, historic photos from 1939 to 1945 depict the time of struggle, sacrifice, and unprecedented economic, industrial, and human mobilization that blurred many distinctions between military and civilian life during World War II.The program was created by Nicholas Bordonnay of Westwater Arts. Bordonnay is a photographer and multimedia artist who joined Westwater Arts in 2009. He has worked with orchestras in Dallas, Cincinnati, Boulder, Omaha, Glasgow, Liverpool, Singapore, and Toronto among others. He has produced and performed a number of commissioned photchoreography pieces in collaboration with James Westwater including a 2011 commission for the Tucson and Phoenix Symphonies in which they photographed the remarkable Grand Canyon Region. He has also independently produced four photochoregraphy pieces including the one to be performed by the Canton Symphony.Photo Courtesy of the Canton Symphony Orchestra
