The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), presents the 4th Annual New Work program dedicated exclusively to premiering contemporary works while offering NWS Fellows the opportunity to work with some of today's greatest living composers and artists. The evening will feature new work by Michael Gordon, Miami Beach native and co-founder of New York's Bang on a Can Festival, in collaboration with award-winning filmmaker Bill Morrison; 2014-15 New Voices composer Ted Hearne; and TONY, Drama Desk and OBIE Award-winning orchestrator Bruce Hornsby. Performances will take place on January 30 and 31 at 7:30 PM, at New World Center in Miami Beach, FL. On January 31, the performance will also be a WALLCAST™ concert for audiences in the adjacent Miami Beach Soundscape. WALLCAST™ concerts share NWS's artistry through the use of state-of-the-art audio technology and striking visuals projected on a soaring 7,000 square-foot wall.

Closing the program is NWS's dual music and film commission of longtime artistic partners Michael Gordon and Bill Morrison. Known for their collaborative projects that capture the essence of cities, this 30-minute multidisciplinary work titled El Sol Caliente is inspired by Miami Beach and its upcoming centennial celebration. Gordon's composition for large orchestra will be conducted by NWS Artistic Director and Co-Founder Michael Tilson Thomas as Morrison's corollary film-including imagery drawn from the collection of the Florida Moving Image Archives-is projected onto the acoustical sails and other surfaces within the concert hall.

Also on the program is the world premiere of three orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin of Bruce Hornsby's songs from SCKBSTRD. This original musical with music and lyrics by Hornsby tells the story of a stranger's visit to a small town with a terrible secret. The fully staged musical premiered in 2011 performed by the Virginia Stage Company. Sonny Emory will appear as Mr. Hornsby's drummer.

Beginning the night will be the premiere of 2014-15 New Voices composer Ted Hearne's composition for orchestra, Dispatches. Hearne is known for combining various musical traditions and styles to createintense, personal and multi-dimensional pieces. The work will be led by NWS Conducting Fellow Christian Reif, under the mentorship of Michael Tilson Thomas.

Now in its third season, New Voices is an annual collaborative commissioning project between NWS, the San Francisco Symphony and music publisher Boosey & Hawkes that helps develop the professional careers of emerging composers in the Americas. This project creates opportunities for NWS Fellows to collaborate with composers, to workshop and premiere newly created works, to understand the compositional process, and to serve an important role in helping emerging composers-who are their future colleagues-realize their creations.

New World Symphony's New Work concerts are sponsored in part by Sir Michael Moritz and Ms. Harriet Heyman, the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation, Funding Arts Network, and The Amphion Foundation. NWS WALLCAST™ concerts are presented by Citi.
