Music Mountain, America's oldest continuing summer chamber music festival, continues its 86th anniversary season with the Calidore String Quartet and guest artist Daniel Phillips, viola on Sunday, June 21st (3PM) performing Schubert, Caroline Shaw, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. Also this weekend, America's foremost Gilbert & Sullivan repertory ensemble, the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, honors their 40th anniversary season on Saturday, June 20th (6:30PM) including a special pre-concert dinner at The Falls Village Inn (5PM). This weekend also marks the beginning of the new Distinguished Artist Recital Series - a series of three evening recitals on Fridays (7:30pm) featuring the talents of this summer's visiting faculty. Music Mountain has a long-standing tradition of bringing musicians of all ages to Gordon Hall. This weekend is a glowing example of this mission - the young Calidore String Quartet is embarking on their 4th year as an ensemble, while The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players are celebrating their 40th year! Chamber music, country, jazz, and folk concerts will continue thru September 27th.

The weekend begins on Friday with the first installment of the Distinguished Artist Recital Series. This summer's visiting faculty will each offer a recital performance featuring the masterpieces of classical music. Music Mountain will welcome Daniel Phillips, violin, and Jonathan Yates, piano for a recital program featuring Mozart: Violin Sonata in E Flat Major, K.380 - a Music Mountain premiere!; Bach: Sonata # 1 for Solo Violin in G Minor, BWV 1001; Eugene Phillips: Fantasy Étude (2013) - Music Mountain premiere!; Brahms, Sonata for Violin & Piano #1 in G Major, Opus 78; and Wieniawski: Polonaise de Concert in D Major, Opus 4 - Music Mountain premiere!

Daniel Phillips, a member of the Orion String Quartet, enjoys a versatile career as an established chamber musician, solo artist and teacher. Mr. Phillips has performed as soloist with many of the country's leading symphonies (Pittsburgh, Houston, Yakima), regularly appears at chamber music festivals around the country (Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, Chesapeake Music Festival), and as a member of the renowned Bach Aria Group. Mr. Phillips is Professor of Violin at the Aaron Copland School of Music of Queens College, and on the faculties of the Mannes College of Music and the Bard Conservatory.

Jonathan Yates, pianist, is the fourth Musical Director of Music Mountain in its eighty-six year history. He is also Music Director of both the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra and the Norwalk Youth Symphony. He has collaborated with many of the country's most respected musicians, including Midori, Kim Kashkashian, David Finckel, Gilbert Kalish, Ida Kavafian, Colin Carr, Paul Neubauer, Joseph Lin, and Anthony McGill. Mr. Yates made his professional orchestral conducting debut at 23, leading the National Symphony Orchestra in a Millennium Stages Concert, and made his Carnegie Hall debut (Stern Auditorium) as a pianist in the following year. He has also served on the faculty of Sarah Lawrence College.

The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players -- celebrating four decades of fun, frivolity and fearless performances -- inaugurate the Saturday evening twilight series! The Wandr'ing Ministrels, five of NYGASP's top singers, perform a condensed version of the Gilbert & Sullivan classic, HMS Pinafore with costumes, props and staging followed by an elegant concert of favorite G&S scenes and songs!

Concertgoers will have the opportunity to attend a pre-concert dinner at The Falls Village Inn at 5PM prior to Saturday evening's performance. $65 ticket price includes dinner and the Gilbert & Sullivan performance. Seating is Limited. Reservations for dinner must be made by Friday, June 21. 860-824-7126.
